What is more interesting about this project is the timing and the concept of pulling information from a Drupal website, into a wholly separate front end. This concept is similar, if not the same as what others refer to as a "headless CMS" or "decoupled Drupal". Right now there is a movement toward headless CMS configuration--that is, a CMS that serves to gather information, providing the tools for users to easily create content, while serving that content to end-users through a lightweight front end. The advantages of doing this include gains in performance, improved security, and easier backup and recovery.
Current versions of Drupal include the ability to serve content through a built-in JSON API endpoint. This is a huge gain for those who want to separate the front and back ends of their systems. In fact, this content has been pulled from Drupal and is being served from a static site.
